Neurotransmitters are the substances by which specific messages are relayed from one neuron to another in the brain. With over one hundred identified and counting, they are the chemical messages that our cells manufacture automatically, and that we manipulate via pharmaceutical drugs deliberately. Between overlapping neuronal networks, the multimodal nature of neurotransmitters, and varying patterns of neuronal firing, even a limited number of neurotransmitters can lead to a seemingly infinite number of conscious states. In a way, they are the spices of life.
