WORK IN TEACHING
WORK IN ARTS NONPROFITS
- Adjunct Professor at Montserrat College of Art (2020-present)
- "Business Practices in Art and Design"
- This course covers the fundamentals of how to treat your art or design practice as a small business, how to operate as an independent contractor/artist entrepreneur, and how to start a small for profit and nonprofit business in the arts. Content covered will include business plan development, taxes-accounting-budgeting basics, copyright and trademark considerations, content marketing and branding, and guest lectures by artist and entrepreneurial professionals.
- "Navigating the Creative Economy"
- Combining an overview of fundamental economic shifts and specific case studies, this course provides students with tools to analyze the structure and function of the cultural marketplace. Specific examples will range from startups and small businesses to established corporations. Broader topics will include how the emphasis on an experience economy alters the interplay between producing goods and providing services; ongoing developments in digital technologies; and ways that the creative economy can contribute to community vitality. By examining how certain businesses respond to, and in some cases transform, the contemporary cultural and economic landscape, students will learn how to recognize and respond to potential opportunities.
- "Science & Technology in Contemporary Art"
- Contemporary art continually evolves alongside and in response to cultural shifts. Since the 1960s, striking and world-changing advances in science and technology have swept our culture and become part of our everyday lives. In response, artists have increasingly turned their creative gaze towards these disciplines as sources of conceptual inspiration, novel materials, and new methods of making. Artists are painting with bacteria, creating 3D-printed sculptures from their own medical data, collaborating with unicellular organisms, crocheting coral reefs, implanting seismic sensors in their own bodies, programming artificial intelligences, and more. This course will explore how contemporary artists in a variety of media are engaging with the fields of science and technology in this avant-garde movement known as SciArt.
- "Biology of Perception"
- What biological mechanisms underlie visual perception? How do our five senses give rise to aesthetic experiences? This course will overview the biological underpinnings of the brain's perceptual systems within the context of making and experiencing art. From the fundamentals of cellular biology, to the complexities of neuroaesthetics, students will become familiar with the history of neuroscience, gain an understanding of neurobiology, and apply that knowledge to art-making. Drawing from a variety of neuroscience texts and online materials, course work will include readings, writings, and content-related art projects.
- "Business Practices in Art and Design"
- Adjunct Professor at Merrimack College (2020-2021)
- "Postmodern Art and Beyond"
- Contemporary art is always evolving. Many cultural and political shifts took hold in the 1960s—Civil Rights Movement, Feminist Movement, Anti-War Movement, Digital Revolution, Environmentalism, LGBTQ Movement, and others. How did these cultural and political changes have an impact on art and its processes? How did they influence artists of the era, as well as the comprehension of art itself? This course will provide an understanding of those cultural shifts, and how they became the context for art-making. Through readings, lectures, discussions and experiential field trips, the class will explore what contemporary art is, how it can reflect political events and cultural movements, and why it is important to the human condition.
- "Arts Management"
- How do the arts intersect with the world of business? This course will introduce students to the challenging and exciting sector of arts management within the context of their own artistic practice, as well as their prospective careers. Students will explore the management of a variety of disciplines including music, theatre, visual arts, design, and the interdisciplinarity of the arts. Content covered will include an overview of arts management in the United States, the fundamentals of how to treat your arts or design practice as a business, how to operate as an independent contractor/artist entrepreneur, how to start a small business in the arts, and survey the variety of careers and opportunities available within arts management.
- "Art and Culture I: Prehistory to Renaissance"
- An examination of selected works of art and architecture and the historical and cultural contexts appropriate to them, from the birth of image-making to the high culture of the late Middle Ages.
- "Postmodern Art and Beyond"
- Adjunct Professor at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (2021)
- "Science & Technology Art"
- This practicum explores how science and technology can push an arts practice of any medium in new exciting directions. From painting with bacteria to sculpting climate change data, performing with artificial intelligences, and more, the world of science and technology is open to the arts in a variety of conceptual and material ways. Students will create projects based on research and data in key scientific areas such as biology, ecology, and astrophysics, and experiment with utilizing novel technologies such as 3D printing and biophysical data sensors.
