Laboratory visit with Dr. Paula Croxson:
A walk through Central Park brought us uptown to Mount Sinai Hospital and the Friedman Brain Institute where Dr. Paula Croxson, a neuroscientist from the U.K., studies the mechanisms of memory. As a scientist Paula engages in science outreach on a regular basis through public events like science-comedy shows and "Pint of Science" talks at bars, and is also in a band comprised of scientists where she plays the flute. Paula shared with us her career path, the ethical and emotional difficulties of animal research, the liberty of researching science for science's sake, and passion for understanding the brain.

Exhibit visit to the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum for "Design by the People" & "Scraps: Fashion, Textiles, and Creative Reuse":
In the afternoon we went to the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum to see their "Design by the People" exhibit, which features 60 collaborative projects that rethink real-world solutions to make them more economical, accessible, and applicable. An interactive portion of this exhibit asked participants to choose a problem and devise a solution, adding their own voice to a collection of proposals on pink notecards. Downstairs at "Scraps," we saw fashion and garments made from recycled materials from around the world.

"Elements" jazz performance by Kavita Shaw at the Rubin Museum:
We spent Friday night at the Rubin Museum for a performance by Kavita Shaw inspired by the five elements earth, air, water, fire, and ether. A contemporary force in jazz, Kavita's performance was paired with projected art objects from the museum which she incorporated into her musical inspiration.
