Day 2:
Discussion Session
travel to NYC
Visit to Julia's live/work space
On the second day, the morning was spent discussing the student's mini-assignment: What is your favorite example of a product or thing which required cross-disciplinary collaboration in order to create, and why?
Here is a list of the answers given: eye glasses, makeup, film cameras, FitBit, movies, solar energy plane, snack foods, piano, the Internet, cars, cat ear headphones, coffee, rainboots, Rubik's Cube, prosthetic arm, television, lung flute, architecture, dance, music composition programs, pens, Beatrix Potter
While their answers varied greatly, there were a few recurring themes:
- the need for something to be designed well in order to become popular
- high technology as a means to better existing solutions
We spent the early afternoon going over details about our upcoming time in New York City. Staying in a hotel near Times Square, students were provided with a 7-day unlimited subway pass, downloaded the MTA Subway Map app, and were paired in a buddy system. We learned quickly about how to travel around NYC in a 24-person group!
That evening the students visited Queens, where my live/work space is. Students saw some of my current art work, and what it looks like to run a business from your home. We ate dinner at a local Thai restaurant and got to know each other a bit better!
