Brodmann's subways
2013. 5"x5"x5". Complete NYC subway map, neuroscientific brain map from Brodmann. Papier mache, brain model.
Anatomically, the brain is an organ with many parts, but beyond gross anatomy there are many different ways the brain can be mapped, depending on what the goal of the map is . Like the variety of pixels in an image, you can divide the building blocks of the brain, neurons, into classes according to function, to spatial location, shape, type, communication behaviors and the like to suit a mapping purpose. Brodmann's Map, created by anatomist Korbinian Brodmann in 1909, is one of the earliest brain maps ever made dividing the cerebral cortex, or the outer most layer of the brain, into 52 areas of distinct cytoarchitectural function.
